Understanding the Past to Understand the Present
After making our Road Trip to the Civil Rights Movement, we will read speeches of that time period that made an strong impact on our country. As with any text, we first read for meaning. Annotate the text for meaning. The second read should focus on the rhetorical devices. Use a second color to annotate the rhetorical devices.

For the final assessment, there will be a list of speeches to select one to read. You will annotate it and then write an analysis. Be sure to refer to your informational rubric. The assessment will be Monday, March 23.
After reading and annotating the text, answer the following questions:
Subject: What is the subject of the speech?
Occasion: Discuss the context of the speech; consider
the setting, circumstances, events, the
era, the historical or cultural context.
Audience: Identify the intended audience and discuss
why the audience and discuss why the

Purpose: Analyze the author's purpose.
Speaker's Attitude: Determine the tone of the piece. What is the
attitude and why was this tone used?
